The Road Trip

By Beth O’Leary.

We’ve all done it, taken that hours-long drive to the beach, college, or maybe Grandma’s house. Most are uneventful, with only a light traffic jam on the interstate or a long line at the rest stop bathroom causing some discomfort. This isn’t the case for sisters Addie and Deb when they drive to a friend’s wedding. Their day-long trip to the north of Scotland turns into a chaotic mess, starting when they literally bump into Addie’s ex, Dylan, in a fender bender on the highway. With one car out of commission, they all pile into Addie’s Mini (which is one tiny car!) and keep on going. Or at least they try.

If something can go wrong, it does. Not only is their ETA pushed farther and farther behind, but Addie and Dylan are forced to confront their relationship history in close quarters while dealing with one roadway mishap after another. During the journey, we learn about the breakup from both Dylan’s and Addie’s points of view. Although their feelings for each other were strong, the romance was fraught with doubt, miscommunication, and meddling friends. They didn’t survive these counteractive forces the first time around. Could this road trip be their chance to start fresh?

One of my favorite reads, “The Road Trip,” is a crazy, no-holds-barred journey by Beth O’Leary.
